Not much is known about this new entry, but according to the report, it will take place in a “medieval inspired Doom world” and could potentially serve as a prequel of sorts to 2016’s Doom and 2020’s Doom Eternal. Whether or not the game will include some form of multiplayer is still unknown.
Back in February, Microsoft revealed it would begin releasing some of its first party games on PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch. It was later reported that other Xbox first-party titles, including the still unannounced next Doom game, were still under consideration for release on non-Xbox consoles.
It’s worth noting that Doom Eternal in 2020 did release on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, but that was before Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of Bethesda, which owns Doom developer ID Software, had officially gone through. That means there’s a solid chance Doom: The Dark Ages could come to PlayStation 5, though fans will have to wait for Microsoft to officially comment on the matter.
Microsoft, hot off its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, will be holding a special showcase for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 following its main Xbox Showcase. Other games rumored to be shown at the Xbox Showcase include Gears 6.
Doom and Doom Eternal have effectively rebooted the long-running FPS series, earning positive reviews and proving to be big hits for Bethesda. Praised for their single-player campaigns, 2016’s Doom did feature traditional multiplayer as well. Doom Eternal instead opted for an asymmetric multiplayer called Battlemode that pitted one Doomslayer against player-controlled demons in addition to its campaign mode, and also received an expansion, The Ancient Gods. A mobile Doom game, Mighty Doom, released in March 2023.
